Single-Wall vs Double-Wall Boxes: Which Do You Need?
Choosing between single-wall and double-wall corrugated boxes comes down to what you are shipping, how far it travels, and how it is handled on the way. Get it right and you protect your goods without overpaying for board you do not need.
Single-Wall Boxes
Single-wall board has one fluted layer sandwiched between two liners. It is the workhorse of e-commerce, ideal for most parcels up to a few kilograms: apparel, accessories, books, cosmetics, and light homeware. It keeps your dimensional weight down, folds and packs quickly, and costs less per unit, which matters when you ship in volume.
Use single-wall when the contents are reasonably robust, the journey is short to medium, and boxes are not stacked under heavy loads.
Double-Wall Boxes
Double-wall board adds a second fluted layer, giving two cushioning cores and markedly higher crush resistance. Choose it for heavier goods, fragile or high-value items, long or multi-leg transit, and anything stacked on pallets where boxes bear the weight above them.
The trade-off is straightforward: more protection and stacking strength, but greater weight and cost per box. For pallet freight or export, that extra rigidity usually pays for itself in fewer damages.
Quick Comparison
| Factor | Single-wall | Double-wall |
|---|---|---|
| Typical weight range | Up to a few kg | Heavier / bulky loads |
| Protection | Good for everyday goods | High, for fragile or valuable items |
| Stacking on pallets | Limited | Strong |
| Cost per box | Lower | Higher |
How to Decide
Weigh your product, consider the transit distance and handling, and think about whether boxes will be stacked. When in doubt for fragile or pallet-bound shipments, step up to double-wall. Right-sizing the box matters too: see our guide on how to choose a shipping box size.
